Training Course on Operational Intelligence Analysis

The African Centre for the Study and Research on Terrorism (ACSRT), in collaboration with the German Federal Police (BKA), organized a training course on “Operational Intelligence Analysis” at its Headquarters in Algiers, from 23 September to 1 October 2013.

This course was the first of two courses to be organized this year by the African Union with the support of the German Government. The second training course is due to place in Bamako in November.

It should be recalled that the first activity within this framework was a workshop on operational intelligence analysis jointly organized by the ACSRT and the German Federal Police (BKA) at the ACSRT headquarters from 17 to 25 April 2012.

The African Union, in organizing this training, aims to enhancing Sahel-Saharan Member States through continued training and practice and the production of a critical mass of bright and knowledgeable intelligence analysts in the region.

This year the training was attended by 31 intelligence practitioners from 15 Sahel -Saharan Countries, namely: Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, SADR, Senegal, Togo and Tunisia and the UFL Sahel.

Over a period of eight days, the trainees were provided with the theory of intelligence analysis in a variety of interactive formats reinforced through the use of practical exercises.

The training covered topics such as analysis and investigation, information processing at police level and data assessment, establishment of hypotheses and development of conclusions.

In particular, the trainees, in interactive manner, discussed how to analyze the criminal business of drug trafficking, smuggling, money laundering and other types of organized crimes which will be relevant to participants’ area of activities.

At the end of the training the participants became acquainted with the theory and practice of intelligence analysis and evaluation. They also went through an end – of – course examination and received certificates.
