13th ACSRT Annual Focal Points Meeting

Today, 18 November 2019, Algiers, Algeria: The African Centre for the Study and Research on Terrorism (ACSRT) is holding its 13th ACSRT Annual Focal Points Meeting from 18th to 20th November 2019 in Algiers, Algeria.
The FP meeting aims to review the Terrorism and violent extremism situation on the African continent in order to evolve courses of action and areas of cooperation among the African Union Member States.

The opening ceremony was graced by H.E Ambassador Smail Chergui, Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union Commission, Larry Gbevlo-Lartey Esq., AU Special Representative for Counterterrorism Cooperation and Director of the ACSRT and H.E Ambassador Claude joseph Mbafou, Ambassador of Cameroon and Dean of African Diplomatic cord in People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria and Minister Counsellor Tomas Lopez Vilarino representing Spanish embassy to People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria

The meeting gathered the ACSRT’s National and Regional Focal Points from African Union Member States, Regional Economics Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanism (RMs) IGAD, SADC, EAC, Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and the Sahel Fusion and Liaison Unit (UFL Sahel). In addition to representatives from African Union Commission, African Union Mechanism for Police Co-operation (AFRIPOL) and Committee of Intelligence and Security Services of Africa (CISSA) as well as African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)

The three-day meeting will allow the National and Regional Focal Points to enhance their understanding on the prevailing violent extremism and terrorism threat as well as progress made on Counter Terrorism (CT) and Prevention and Combating of Violent Extremism (PCVE) activities at national and regional levels. The Meeting also provides a platform to interact, exchange and share information on CT/PCVE issues and identify best practices and challenges. The Meeting will also identify the new priorities, explore new areas of cooperation between ACSRT and Focal Points.
