workshop on Response to Violent Extremism and Terrorism in the East and Horn of Africa Region

13-14 November 2018: The African Centre for the Study and Research on Terrorism (ACSRT/CAERT) organized a two-day workshop under the theme “Response to Violent Extremism and Terrorism in the East and Horn of Africa Region” in Entebbe, Uganda.

The workshop drew participants and experts from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, the Kofi Annan Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the ACSRT.
This workshop aimed at building a common understanding of Violent Extremism/ Terrorism and adopted shared approaches to counter their manifestations and shaping strategies to prevent their appearance, immunize vulnerable groups of population, rehabilitate radicalized individuals and groups, as well as build resilience to extremism appeals.

The workshop enabled the ACSRT to:

i. Explore measures to enhance inter-stakeholder sharing and evaluation of experiences on PCVE and combating of terrorism in the adjoining IGAD and EAC regions.
ii. Identify possible options with a view to promote grassroots empowerment to enable them to instrumental in the development and implementation of inclusive PCVE policies, strategies and Plans of Action (PoA).
iii. Promote intra- and inter-regional cooperation in terms of exchange of information and sharing of resources.
