16 December 2017: The African Centre for the Study and Research on Terrorism (ACSRT), organized the Second Meeting of African Regional Counter-Terrorism Coordinators under the theme “Exploring Ways of Enhancing Cooperation Between Regional Economic Communities (RECs)/regional mechanisms (RMs) and the ACSRT,” 14-15 December 2017, at its headquarters in Algiers, Algeria.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Mr.Larry Gbevlo-LarteyEsq., AU Special Representative for CT Cooperation/Director ACSRT,H.E Ambassador Dennis T. Dlomo, Ambassador of South Africa to Algeria, H.E Ambassador Marou Ali Diallo, Ambassador of Niger to Algeria and H.E Ambassador of Nigeria to Algeria.

This meeting, building from the recommendations of the first one was organized in 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, sought to promote unified regional and inter-regional mutual responses in the face of scourges of terrorism and transnational organized crime. This facilitates the formulation of uniform programs which will ease cross-region coordination and exploration of synergies in operations and capacity building.

The Meeting enabled participants to share experiences, facilitate a common understanding of the each party’s situation, and expose challenges as well as jointly brainstorm the way forward. It also provided a platform for further interaction amongst us in matters of mutual cooperation, joint capacity building programs, strengths and challenges as well as priority areas. In this sense the meeting provided an opportunity to:

• Take note of the regional situations and developments
• Understand regional CT efforts;
• Review the progress of Regional Fusion Centers and Regional Mechanisms.
• Update each other on the status of implementation of the first meeting’s recommendations,
• Understand each party’s challenges and opportunities counterparts can capitalize on.
• Explore priority programs and identify possible areas of synergies.
Officials from the ECOWAS, EAC, SADC and African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOC) participated in this meeting.
